Revolut Launches “Street Mode”: Location-Based Protection for Safer Transfers

Revolut has introduced a new security feature – Street Mode, designed to add an additional layer of protection when using the app. Street Mode works alongside State Protection, a tool already used by more than 1 million customers across Europe to prevent unauthorized transactions in cases of theft or coercion.

The feature arrives right before the busy holiday season, when mobile phone theft and fraud spike in crowded streets, markets, malls, and travel hotspots.

What Is Street Mode?

Street Mode allows customers to define their own trusted locations – such as home, office, or hotel.
Whenever the user is outside these areas, Revolut automatically delays outgoing transfers above a pre-set limit.

The logic is simple:
👉 If someone steals your phone or tries to force you to make a transfer, the built-in 1-hour delay provides a crucial window to stop the transaction.

How Does It Work?

Inside trusted locations (home / work / hotel)

  • Transfers above the user-defined limit are processed instantly
  • Only a quick selfie confirmation is required

Outside trusted locations

  • Transfers above the limit are automatically delayed by 1 hour
  • Once the hour passes, the user must confirm the transfer again with a selfie
  • This ensures the transaction is made voluntarily, not under pressure – including in rare but possible cases of coercion-based robbery

Customers can add or remove trusted locations at any time, including temporary places such as a hotel while traveling.

Why Does This Matter?

Mobile phone thefts continue to increase across Europe, and fraudsters are becoming more coordinated and opportunistic. Revolut reports rising cases involving:

  • stolen unlocked phones
  • attempts to force victims to initiate transfers
  • fraud in crowded areas (markets, transport hubs, shopping streets)

Street Mode is designed to protect users from physical threats, not just digital attacks – giving them real control in situations where seconds matter.

“We’re putting security back into the hands of our customers. Street Mode is a smart shield that understands where you feel safe,” says Rami Kalai, Product Owner for Retail Trust at Revolut.

How to Activate Street Mode

1️⃣ Turn on State Protection
2️⃣ Set your transfer limits
3️⃣ Enable Street Mode
4️⃣ Add one or more trusted locations

Who Benefits the Most?

Street Mode is particularly valuable for:

  • Frequent travelers, who can add their hotel as a temporary safe zone
  • People living in large cities, where phone theft is more common
  • Users with higher transfer limits or business payments
  • Anyone seeking maximum protection without changing their daily habits

Revolut continues to expand its security toolkit across Europe, combining biometric checks, geolocation, behavioral signals, and extra verification layers for stronger protection.

Final Thoughts

Street Mode is a meaningful next step in Revolut’s security evolution.
In a world where physical phone theft is more common than digital hacking, having a built-in protection delay gives users real, practical control while keeping daily payments fast and smooth.
